"Harikomi" was first published in the December 1955 issue of the monthly fiction magazine Shosetsu Shincho and first anthologized in Kao, which received the 10th Japan Mystery Writers Association Award in 1957. Since 1995, Futabasha has published the Kao collection, which saves "Harikomi" till last, as Volume 9 of its "Nihon Suiri Sakka Kyokai Sho Jushosaku Zenshu" paperback series.

Shinchosha's Harikomi paperback, published in 1965 and still in print, is the earliest anthology to feature "Harikomi" as the title story. This edition leads off with "Harikomi", as does Kobunsha's 1978 Harikomi collection, which is also still in print.
